7779 Varna before and after clean up

Councilmember Nazarian:
The week of April 20, 2026 we completed our cleanup of 7779 Varna Avenue, a neglected property that had become a nest of criminal activity. After the absentee landlord failed to respond to the City’s requests to clean up their site, we called in LADOT, San Fernando Valley Mental Health Center, LAPD, Animal Control and the Department of Sanitation.

Together they removed three vehicles, three illegal dumpsites, more than 40 tons of trash, 400 pounds of paint, 300 pounds of human waste, 105 pounds of ignitable waste, 70 pounds of reactive waste, 70 corrosive materials, 20 pounds of oil, 20 hypodermic needles and 20 items of other drug paraphernalia. The overgrown vegetation used to hide illegal activity has been removed.

I thank the Mayor’s office and the City Attorney, among others, for helping to coordinate all these departments. Most of all, a big thank you to the Varna Avenue neighbors for persistently raising their concerns. Because you spoke up, we have taken action. Never stop speaking up.
