Here is what your North Hollywood West Neighborhood Council worked on during our October 14th meeting:

Safety & Access in Our Parks

  • Strathern Park West Entrance Blocked: Council District 2 reported three massive boulders placed across the Strathern Park West entrance, blocking emergency fire truck access to nearby homes. CD2 is reviewing local camera footage with LAPD and Rec & Parks to identify who placed them and arrange heavy equipment for removal.
  • CSUN Urban Planning Study: CSUN students surveyed board members and neighbors to create design concepts for Strathern Park West. A draft proposal will be shared shortly; this is purely an academic exercise and non-binding.

Emergency Services & Fire Safety

  • Red Flag Warning: LAFD Battalion Chief Brian Franco reported Red Flag weather protocols and augmented staffing starting October 15.
  • Storm & Earthquake Prep: Fire stations are stocking sandbags ahead of El Niño winter storms. Residents are encouraged to download the MyShake app and sign up for LAFD alerts.

State Funding & Legislative Updates

Assemblywoman Celeste Rodriguez’s office highlighted key state budget allocations for our area:
  • $3.75M for Wildfire Mitigation: Funding allocated for emergency access roads in Sylmar, with $1.25M dedicated to starting a new Sylmar fire station.
  • $2.0M for CHIRLA: Secured for immigrant support services at CHIRLA’s Pacoima office.
  • Student Mental Health Act: One of six signed state bills, establishing counseling support for students affected by ICE enforcement.

Board Actions & Votes

The board took action on the following items:
  • Nuisance Property Abatement (Council File 26-1280): Approved a Community Impact Statement supporting citywide efforts to clean and abate chronic vacant, neglected properties.
