In 2019 NoHo West has been focused on creating opportunities for the community to come together for education, service or fun, or better yet, all three at once!
Community Education
For education we started by sponsoring the Public Safety Town Hall with LAPD Chief Michel Moore which was a chance to hear his vision for improving policing in LA through greater use of volunteers.
We sponsored the STEAM Festival hosted by Assemblywoman Luz Rivas in May, providing water and snacks. We were delighted that our color changing stadium cup giveaways worked right in with the science theme of the event!
We hosted a well-attended Smart Money Seminar where residents learned about energy efficiency programs and rebates. For parents and grandparents, we hosted a Town Hall on bullying and how to stop it.
NoHo West sponsored Back To School at Madison Middle School, Gang intervention at the Whitsett Sports Field and the Valley Disaster Preparedness Fair where attendees learned how to put together Go bags and more.
Community Service
For community service we supported planting 70 new trees in Jamie Beth Slaven Park during the MLK Day of Service and we held a shredding event where residents brought up to four boxes of paper to shred and prevent identity theft.
Community Fun
For community fun we conducted Movies in the Park with the Despicable Me series of three movies and sponsored the NoHo Summer Nights series of eight concerts in the park, as well as Easter and Halloween events at Valley Plaza Park. All of these programs allowed our community to come out and enjoy our parks at wonderful free family friendly events.
Community Works
In addition to these great community events, we encouraged stakeholders to participate in the Community Plan process which will shape the future of North Hollywood. And we provided information about other important City initiatives and events via our website, emails and social media.
NoHo West was instrumental in identifying a dangerous intersection to the City and requesting new stop signs which were installed in June at Bellaire Ave. and Bassett St.
We supported local organizations with Neighborhood Purpose Grants to help the homeless with supplies for their pets and provide supplies for Perry’s Place a cat rescue clinic and adoption center.
We continue to keep an eye out for our most important beautification project, the Whitsett Mural. We recently selected a new company that has repaired the plumbing irrigation and cleared the weeds surrounding the mural. They are maintaining the slopes twice a month. We are next considering what additional plants to install.
2020 Vision
In 2020 we plan to keep up the great work that we have started in community education, service and fun and add on a few new items. In January we will have a Town Hall on a proposed Cannabis Dispensary. We would like to work with the Clean Streets Clean Starts Program to simultaneously bring opportunities to our homeless and clean our community.
On beautification we want to get the community involved in addressing the eyesore that is in front of Public Storage just down the street from the Whitsett Mural. What do you think, is this an opportunity for another mural or landscaping?
At NoHo West Neighborhood Council we are doing work of significance in North Hollywood and we invite you to join us. Got a passion for a project we haven’t yet considered? Bring it on! Let’s see how we can partner together for North Hollywood! Come to a meeting, sign up for our emails and join our conversation on facebook.com/NoHoWest/.
